Sony’s Message

A big “fuck you” to gamers everywhere today as popular Hong Kong import site Lik Sang was forced to close its doors due to constant lawsuits from Sony. I know a lot of companies probably aren’t happy about the whole concept of importing, but besides the multi-party lawsuits in 2002 about modchips, there hasn’t been any legal action against them lately. Besides, that is, from Sony.

Why did Sony unleash its Litigation Cannon? Apparently, Lik Sang had sold imported PSPs to the UK before they were released in that foggy region, which Sony did not cotton to, not one bit. Lik Sang kept shipping the PSPs, since Hong Kong laws state that once an item appears in a market anywhere worldwide, it can be traded freely.

Well, as of October 24, 2006, Lik Sang is out of business. It makes me wonder if Sony has some kind of department that specializes in this kind of activity, as I believe that unintentional generation of fury in such mass levels is impossible. One need simply look into the discussion anywhere this story is posted. Lik Sang was not just another importer. People are furious, and the froth has already reached rabies levels.

It just makes me wonder, really. Why are they doing things like this? They must have a plan — I have no doubt that this latest development is but a node on some epic flowchart, just after promoting giant enemy crabs. Of course, there is the alternative. Sony is either the most brilliant company this world has ever known, or they’ve gone absolutely batshit crazy. Either way, I can’t wait to see what the Department of Assfuckings comes up with next.
